Wow, what a beautiful time of the year! It seems everywhere you look something is in bloom, from the tallest trees to the smallest bulbs. The temperatures have been up and down, but if you are able, you should be outside in the garden. There are all kinds of things you can do. I just might mow my lawn for the first time this weekend, and it's not even May.
Q. What is the best wood to use when building a raised flower/vegetable garden? Thanks for the great advice. Peter H.
A. There can be many choices when it comes to building raised beds out of wood. You definitely don't want to use pressure-treated lumber. Treated lumber is chemically preserved to prevent it from rotting; those chemicals can possibly be absorbed into the soil, posing an unhealthy situation for the gardener. Now we know what we don't want to use. If there is no budget limit for the raised beds then redwood [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], cedar or cypress would be my first choices. All of three of them can be expensive but will probably last the longest. Green Douglas fir is nice wood and is durable enough to last for many seasons, and it is also a lot more reasonably priced. There are a number of PVC and composite materials also available that you can use to build your raised beds [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but natural untreated wood is my choice.
Q. I would like to know how to get rid of a weed that is growing in my lawn. It is low-growing, approximately 3 inches high and spreads rapidly. It has tiny purple flowers in the spring. It appears to grow like a vine I can pull a long string out at a time. I've tried Weed and Feed. It killed the dandelions, but this weed continued growing. A. It sounds as if you are describing a plant called henbit. Often confused with speedwell, dead nettle and ground ivy, henbit has square stems and purple, tubular, two-lipped flowers that form on the upper part of the plant. Henbit flowers in early spring, and it spreads by seeds that mature from April to June. The seeds then germinate either in the fall or early spring to start the cycle all over again. A member of the mint family, henbit is an annual weed that does well in cool, moist soil, and it can take over in thin areas of the lawn. If you have a thick, healthy lawn, henbit generally is not too much of a problem; but if you have thin areas, it can prevent grass from growing.
Prevention is the easiest approach to controlling henbit. Fall-applied pre-emergence herbicides such as Preen do a good job if they're applied before the seeds germinate. If this control opportunity is missed, henbit can be controlled by using post-emergence herbicides. Look for a broadleaf herbicide that contains Dicamba or 2-4D. A specific product by Bonide called Weed Beater Ultra works well. Try to spray the plants as soon as you see them in the spring as this will help kill them before they flower and set seed for next season.
