1 week 2 weeks 1 month 3 months All Still searching for a holiday gift for that blues music lover in your life? This year, consider giving them a nice helping of Homemade Jamz. We don't mean the kind you eat on bread; we're talking about the Homemade Jamz you can listen to on your CD or MP3 player - as in the Homemade Jamz Blues Band.
When last we heard from the band (I Got Blues For You),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], this mighty trio of siblings had just put out its second album, I Got Blues For You, on the Northern Blues label. Since then, the Perry kids have moved on and now are on their own (label, that is), making their newest release The Game a truly "homemade" offering.
The label isn't the only thing that's changed from the last album to this one. Having never really had a problem sounding older than their years (eldest sibling and guitarist/vocalist Ryan is now 18, bassist Kyle 16, and drummer/percussionist Taya 12), the talented band shows up to The Game with an even more mature and intense sound. Edgier than their two previous efforts, the album often has a rootsy Moreland and Arbuckle kind of feel, with greater emphasis on harmonica (compliments of father Renaud) and more pronounced drums than we've heard from them before. Indeed, the closest thing to a ballad on this one is the slower but hardly softer "Gotta Bad Bad Feeling," and even that somehow manages to maintain the grittiness of the rest of the record with its soulful, anguished vocals and guitar.
The album opens with the husky voice of Ryan, quickly reminding us of what this young man is capable vocally, leading into a shuffling "Washing Clothes" that puts you squarely back on the Delta. JJ Grey-sounding tunes "I'm the Man" and "Tupelo" help drive the early part of the album, along with the love and sports analogies and funky guitar riffs of the title track. You'll hear more of the same from the guitar, joined by some impressive harp, on "Burned Down the House," while a "Who Do You Love"-sounding start and catchy lyrics (They say the blues y'all was dead and gone/well,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], what the heck we here for?/the blues y'all will never die/so all aboard, get ready to ride) of "Blues Train" keeps the album chugging along nicely. Then there's the rousing "Duck Hill Stomp" before the album closes on the alternative sounds of "Nothing's Changed for the Po'."
As you've likely surmised, this is not an album for the blues faint of heart. The collective energy and intensity of this release from the Homemade Jamz Blues Band are guaranteed to get you moving and grooving,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with a trip to the showers likely in order after this Game.
