| Competition categories for the 2010 festival will again have eight narrative and documentary features each, with all 16 titles in the two categories screening as world premieres.
The SXSW film festival (added along with the interactive festival to the already successful music festival in 1994), is one of North America's most well-known festivals, featuring emerging talent, well-known filmmakers, and hundreds of screenings – some of them world premieres. The three parts run pretty much independently of each other with different start and end dates for each one. The 2010 film festival is promising a diverse group of films and panelists. The lineup includes some heavy hitters such as Universal’s SNL offshoot MacGruber as well as Lionsgate’s teen superhero flick Kick-Ass (the Opening Night film). There are also some great Sundance holdovers like Jay and Mark Duplass' Cyrus, Katie Aselton’s The Freebie and the Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning pic, The Runaways. The list of panelists is quite comprehensive and the festival promises some great conversations with filmmakers ranging from Michel Gondry to a fantastic panel of genre filmmakers, including Ruben Fleischer, Matt Reeves, Quentin Tarantino and Ti West. Philippe’s crowd-sourced documentary The People vs. George Lucas, just to name a few. The purpose of SXSW is to create a launching pad for new content within each of the three mediums. Panel discussions, screenings, and information sessions in the film category offer great exposure for people looking to promote and distribute films, as well as great entertainment for audiences. The Film Conference takes place during the first five days and consists of a seemingly unending variety of panel discussions, workshops, meetings, and presentations featuring world-class speakers including filmmakers and other industry experts. At the same time, but lasting nine days, is the festival, which has programming that ranges from innovative documentaries to laugh-out-loud comedies.
