The narrator of Herman Melvilles Bartleby the Scrivener recounts his experience with Bartleby, a former hired who remains a fascinating enigma. Bartleby responses maximum requests by repeating that he would prefer not to, soon demonstrating that he has not favorites, only an unswerving dedication to inaction.
He constantly stares at walls, either when hired by the narrator and behind being taken to prison for refusing to leave the narrators office.
Narratorial Blankness
It is possible he sees someone in walls that the repose of us do not.
