A Brief Synopsis of David Lynch's Dune
If you've never heard of Herbert's Dune series, just know this: it is the year 10,191 A.D, and the known universe is ruled by the Padishah Emperor Shaddam the Fourth. Or so the opening narration tells us.
The result was a very densely packed science-fiction adventure, filled with interesting concepts such as "voice weapons", instant galactic travel (imagine warp speed without moving) and mind-enhancing spices.
It would only make sense to assume that Lynch, whose works had included Eraserhead up to that point, would follow Herbert's lead and opt for a very rich visual experience, both cinematically and artistically.
If the above synopsis seemed overly dense, it is merely to portray the rich content Frank Herbert introduced into his books. Rather than settle for a meager setting taking place in some back country, the author took his saga on a galactic scale, with grandiose sequences.
As was said before, the year is 10,191, and the Emperor governs the many Royal Houses of the Lansraad, with each noble family having been told to raise only boys or girls, as per instructions from the Bene Gesserit order of witches. The purpose? By controlling the bloodlines in such a manner, it is hoped that a super-being may be born, one who would possess great powers.
This extremely dense book series didn't necessary lend itself well to the cinematic format, at least not in a two hour film. Nevertheless, Lynch's version (not to mention the fabled four-hour version floating around, a rumor producer Rafaella DeLaurentiis refers to in the extras) is still filled with enough sets and characters to make the most envious science-fiction fans drool with fanboy enthusiasm.

Duke Leto Atreides (Jurgen Prochnow) is a popular member of the Imperial government, and while his royal concubine Jessica (Francesca Annis) has been told to bear only daughters, she gave birth to a son out of love for her Duke, roughly seventeen years back.
Thus was Paul Atreides (Kyle McLachlan) born. The scheming Emperor arranges to have the Atreides' sworn enemies, the Harkonnens, trap their foe in a raid on Arrakis, thus providing a plausible excuse for killing Paul and his father.
